On 24 August 2008 the Beijing Olympic Games came to a close. The eyes of the world are now on London - and Newham - as hosts of the next summer Olympic Games. To mark the occasion films have been produced starring Newham people performing Olympic-inspired feats and reflecting on their dreams and ambitions for 2012.
The 100th person to be helped into work thanks to Newham's Mayor's Employment Project (MEP) is John Knowles, a lorry driver working on the Olympic village site in Stratford.

Newham's Ascension Eagles were honoured to be invited to the US Embassy London for the 4 November Election night celebrations. Selected for their achievements as Britain's Best Cheerleaders, and best Coed team outside of North America, Ascension Eagles performed on the Embassy steps and greeted the 3000 guests as they arrived.

The Deputy Mayor of Newham was among special guests at the launch of a new development by East Homes. Curwen Apartments, in the heart of Plaistow, offers 100 new, affordable homes for local people, first-time buyers and key workers.
