See Stratford in a new light

Stratford will be lit up as never before with a series of light sculptures and illuminations.

The East festival showcases the best of East London culture in a programme of over 400 events covering fashion, film, food, art, history and performance

Newham Council has commissioned its first artist in residence to work on a number of creations that will illuminate key public spaces and buildings.

French lighting artist Laurent Louyer of Creatmosphere will create a path of light between Stratford station and Theatre Square from 6-12 March to coincide with the East festival. The lighting effects will create a new, welcoming approach to the cultural quarter and bring a new look to Stratford.

On Saturday 8 March expert bell ringers from across east London will be giving demonstrations on The Charmborough Ring, the heaviest portable bell tower currently in existence. This takes place in Theatre Square, Stratford from 12.30 to 2.30pm.

Over the following months there are also plans to light the trees along the Broadway in time for the Torch Relay event on 6 April when the Olympic flame tours Stratford on its way to the Beijing 2008 Games. Using light and sound effects, the result will transform trees into living breathing lungs.

Laurent and his company Creatmosphere have created innovative illuminations all over the country and Europe, using the latest low voltage materials which require very little power to create their effects.

The artist will also be working with Active 8 after school club and other local groups to create an installation in Stratford Circus.
