Here We Build Men uses almost 40 photographs and pieces of art that illustrate local history. It has been compiled by historian Lloyd Jeans and artist Tom Ellis from the Woodgrange Society and Residents Association.
Sir Robin said: "This is a wonderfully different exhibition with some inspiring stories about people from the area. This borough is rich in history and I am always finding out more. Clearly, Newham, and particularly Forest Gate, produces only the best!"
Included in the exhibition is the story about Arnold Schwarzenegger training at Wag Bennett's famous Forest Gate gym before he won Mr Universe in 1967. The title of the exhibition, Here We Build Men, is taken from a notice that was on the wall of the gym.
Other local celebrities featured include Forest Gate-born world heavyweight boxing champion Lennox Lewis, two-time Laurence Olivier award-winning actor Chiwetel Ejiofor and rapper Plan B, once dubbed the English Eminem.
Newham councillors Kay Scoresby and Winston Vaughan also attended the launch event.
The exhibition runs until Friday May 23 at The Gate library in Woodgrange Road, Forest Gate.
