Anyone aged over 18 who lives or works in Newham is eligible to nominate a child or young person for an award that recognises the hard work of the borough's school children and students.

Sir Robin said: "Newham's children and young people achieve some outstanding results in a range of specialities and the Shining Through Awards are a great opportunity to reward their hard work.

"We want our young people to excel whatever their background and whatever their chosen field. We can all feel rightly proud of their achievements and I encourage residents to enter individuals or groups for an award."

The six award categories for individuals and groups are: academic excellence, young achiever, young citizen, young creative artist, young sports person and student/apprentice of the year. Student/apprentice of the year is a new category only eligible for young people aged between 16 and 19.

All nominees should be aged between five and 19 and must have attended a Newham state school or sixth form college during the 2006 to 2007 or 2007 to 2008 academic year. Diploma students who started their courses in 2008 can also enter the awards.

The tenth Shining Through Awards will see gold winners announced and prizes presented by a celebrity guest at Stratford Town Hall on November 21.

Winners of gold or silver awards at previous ceremonies are not eligible for entry this year. All nominations must be submitted by October 17.

In each category there will be one gold award worth £100, two £50 silver awards and certificates for bronze award winners.

This year's Shining Through Awards are sponsored by Newham Council, Tate & Lyle, the University of East London, London City Airport and the Newham Recorder.
