Councillor Joy Laguda, who is co-chair of the Newham Food Access Partnership, presented the award to Café Mondo at their restaurant in Stratford Library on The Grove.
To achieve the award, cafés and restaurants have to take part in a rigorous training and nutrition programme which is delivered by Newham College of Further Education and Healthworks, which is attached to the council.
An external chef trainer observed their cooking practices and a nutritionist provided feedback on making small but significant changes to their ingredients to further improve the health content and preparation of meals.
Councillor Laguda said: "This is a great achievement for Café Mondo and all the other cafés that promote healthy eating to their customers.
"A major barrier to people eating healthy food is the lack of awareness about what goes into their meals when they eat out. This scheme will ensure that customers know they are getting a nutritionally balanced and healthy meal."
At the presentation event, Café Mondo demonstrated that healthy means tasty as they made available a selection of toasted pannini tasters for customers to try.
In 2007, they were awarded the National Clean Air Award for going smoke-free early. They achieved three stars under Scores on the Doors from the Foods Standards Agency.
Other cafés that will be receiving a Healthier Options Food award are the Kitchen Table at the Froud Centre in Romford Road, Manor Park and Café Rial at 4a Memorial Avenue, West Ham.
Healthier Options cafés can display a sticker in their window and have the logo next to menu items.
