Councillor Joy Laguda, executive member for older people and Dr Mohit Venkataram, Deputy Head of Adult Services opened the event.

"Stepping Out" was the theme for this year's National Falls Awareness Day and the event kicked off with some older people and staff dancing

Those who attended the event took part in Tai Chi, chair based exercises and Asian and African cultural dance. Physiotherapists from Newham PCT led the exercise sessions and Tai Chi.

Advice and information about fall prevention, blood pressure, medication, healthy eating and foot health were provided by health professionals from Newham PCT.

Councillor Laguda, said: "Falls affect a large number of older people. Not only does it cause pain and discomfort and possibly long term physical damage, it can also impact on the person's confidence and independence.

"Falls can be prevented if a person recognises the risks and can then manage the changes to their environment and lifestyle. I hope that today's event has helped to raise awareness of falls and of the services and facilities that are available to equip them to live a healthy life."

Falls are not an inevitable part of getting older and it is essential to act now to prevent problems in the future.

Health information stalls from physiotherapist, podiatrists and Age Concern were on display at the event.

Dr Mohit Venkataram said: "The Falls Awareness Day event provided the opportunity for our older residents to improve their health, posture and avoid falls. It was a light hearted day filled with entertainment to address serious health concerns for elderly Newham residents."
