Strawberry, pomegranate, pumpkin and okra!

The free event, held at Lister Community School Sports Hall, lured the crowds with an array of tasty and healthy cuisine from Asia, Africa, Britain, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean.

Among the offerings were crispy salads, hot curries, bangers and mash, freshly squeezed fruit juices and Fairtrade chocolates.

Community lead councillor for Plaistow Zulfiqar Ali said: "There was a vibrant atmosphere. It was great to see people sampling foods from the many different members of our community, while also learning about health and wellbeing."

As well as trying new foods participants got nutrition advice and learnt about the five-a-day campaign and Fairtrade.

Healthy Eating Champions, a scheme run by the Newham Food Access Partnership, were on hand to encourage and motivate people to lead a healthier lifestyle.

Children got into the spirit of the event with more than 20 taking part in a fruit and vegetable fancy dress competition.

Among the contestants were a strawberry, pomegranate, pumpkin and okra, but it was four-year-old Daniel Thomas, the potato, who took first prize.

Daniel's mum Janet Thomas said: "I was pleased and surprised when Daniel won - he was so proud of being a potato. It was lovely to try some new foods and we learnt about healthy eating and different food groups."

Plaistow community forum is one of nine forums in Newham working to make each area a healthier, safer and more exciting place to live.
