East Ham's health event hits the mark

Indian head massages and healthy eating tips were in hot demand when more than 200 people enjoyed a free summer health boost at the East Ham community forum health fair.

The event, which was at Flanders Community Centre on Napier Road, was the place to be for a free health check-up, fun activities and expert advice.

Community lead councillor for East Ham, Lakmini Shah, said: "The response from residents was excellent and it was pleasing to see people of all ages eager to learn and sample different health approaches."

The event had a sports zone where people tried belly dancing, low-impact exercise for over 50s, martial arts and basketball.

The nutrition and holistic zone lured people with healthy cooking demonstrations, along with treatments done by the forum's active community team volunteers, including head and foot massages and reflexology.

Those thirsty for knowledge visited the information and advice zone for exercise tips and to find out about the expert patients programme, which is a scheme to support people with long-term health conditions. Many people also had a health MOT.

Active community team volunteer, Lorraine Omeku, was involved in planning the event and said: "It went really well and there were a lot of fun things to do as well as good advice. I definitely want to be involved in something like this again."

The event was hosted by East Ham community forum and its active community team.

East Ham community forum is one of nine forums in Newham working to make each local area a healthier, safer and more exciting place to live.
