The airport has offered the students a three-year bursary of £2,000 per annum and paid work experience, an airport management mentor in all areas of the airport including Customer Services, Communications and Operations. Specialised training courses are also provided throughout the time the students attend university. Since 2004, eleven local students have benefitted from over £133,000 in payments towards their study from the airport.

An event to celebrate the success of the students took place at London City Airport on 18 August. The celebration, attended by Beckton Councillor Alec Kellaway, congratulated the scheme's existing student graduates and welcomed three new intake students.

Councillor Alec Kellaway said: "the London City Airport University Prize Scheme is a brilliant project which assists in nurturing talent. It gives an opportunity for increasing management capacity for residents living within the London Borough of Newham. This is a tremendous scheme which has enriched the future of young people across Newham".

Yasmin Abu, one of the airport's student graduates said: "I am truly grateful to London City Airport for helping me to achieve my dreams. I am the first person within my family to study for a degree so this means so much to us all. With the support of the mentors and the bursary which has lightened the financial burden of university I have been able to focus on my education and reach my full potential".
