Mayor congratulates golden girl Christine

Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales today offered warm congratulations to Stratford athlete Christine Ohuruogu following her 400 metres gold medal winning performance at the Beijing Olympic Games.

Sir Robin said: “This is a proud day for her, her family and friends and for the whole of Newham. It was a very exciting race and tremendous to see her triumph right at the end.

“It adds a new dimension to big sporting events when you know that someone from Newham is competing. We are aIl delighted by her victory. Christine is an exciting talent and we send her our warmest congratulations.”

Christine won the race in a time of 49.62 seconds. She was a firm supporter of the bid to bring the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to East London.

Sir Robin added: “This year’s Olympics is one of the most exciting that we have ever witnessed in terms of medals for the British team.

“Christine’s performance is something that should inspire all of us. We hope many young people are encouraged by her success and will aspire to become successful Olympians and Paralympians of the future.”
