Mayor does the honours at 'graduation'

Mayor Sir Robin Wales did the honours when some of Newham's youngest scholars took part in their graduation day celebrations.
Graduation from nursery to full time education at infants' school at Upton Cross Primary School

Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales joins nursery children to mark their graduation to infants' school at Upton Cross Primary School

But these weren't your usual collection of students receiving their caps and gowns after completing university or college - they were nursery children at Plaistow's Upton Cross Primary School.

The school in Churston Avenue staged a celebration to mark the youngsters reaching the end of part-time nursery classes and graduating into full-time education at infants' school.

The children paraded in traditional caps and gowns and the Mayor presented them with certificates, which they could take home to their parents.

Said Sir Robin: "It is important that we instil aspiration in our young people at a very young age. This cap and gown ceremony is not only a lot of fun for the children but it helps parents and carers realise the potential that these youngsters have.

"These children are the future of our community. Their parents can play a huge role in ensuring their sons and daughters can be whatever they want to be. I was delighted to see so many of them proudly supporting their children.

"Upton Cross and our other schools do a fantastic job. They ensure that the potential of our young people is not limited because of where they live. I want to thank the school for inviting me to take part in the ceremony."
