The two-seater car has a top speed of 60mph and can be charged from any three-pin mains socket. It has a 70-mile range and is capable of reaching 30mph in 6.5 seconds.

Said Sir Robin: "We can all do out bit to protect our environment and make some changes in our lives to be more environmentally friendly."

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor also met up with members of Newham's Volunteers programme who were out in force throughout the motor show to welcome and advise visitors.

Added Sir Robin: "Once again the British International Motor Show has provided Newham and ExCeL with a great opportunity to show that the borough can host big international events. We have given a people a glimpse of what will follow when we welcome the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"The Newham Volunteers have done a fantastic job in representing the borough and lending a helping hand. They are doing us proud and it is great to be able to visit an event and be welcomed by friendly faces."
