Newham's free Summer Of Fun
The Mayor's Newham Show
Around 55,000 people enjoyed a weekend of free family fun at the Mayor's Newham Show in East Ham's Central Park.
A spectacular carnival, live music and dance, sport and fashion were just some of the attractions over the two days of the show, which this year had a green environmental theme.
The carnival procession saw more than 500 children from various schools and community organisations tour the streets of East Ham in a colourful costume parade.
Newham's Green Roadshow was on hand to advise residents about recycling, growing their own vegetables, saving energy at home and using cotton bags instead of plastic. Visitors also built a recycled sculpture and enjoyed songs from the We Are What We Do Choir.
Mayor Sir Robin Wales said: "The Newham Show goes from strength to strength and this year it has been a brilliant success with more than 5,000 visitors above what we had over the two days last year.
"As well as the colour of the carnival and the various sport and music activities, this year we have also had an important message about people making a difference to their environment. It all made for a wonderful family atmosphere with lots of activities for people to get involved with. It really has shown the best of Newham."
The sports zone had activities for people young and old including rowing, table tennis, boxing, martial arts, basketball, handball, running and health MOTs. There were fashion shows with aspiring models and designers and a pamper zone with hair and make-up sessions.
Music and dance stages showed that Newham's got talent with the work of local performers showcasing everything from dhol drummers and gospel choirs to Albanian dance and Bollywood.
A cabaret tent included a tribute to Elvis Presley with impersonator Sal Bashir as well as performances from the Brick Lane Music Hall and the Bassline Circus. There was also food from around the world and a zone for small children containing bouncy inflatables, games and arts and craft.
Added the Mayor: "I thoroughly enjoyed being able meet so many people over the two days. We are already looking forward to hosting next year's event."
