Hansel and Gretel at Theatre Royal Stratford East

Panto season is almost here and this year Theatre Royal Stratford East (TRSE) presents an exciting, modern take on the fairy tale classic - Hansel & Gretel. Sure to delight audiences Hansel & Gretel promises to be full of the spectacle, fun boisterous entertainment that pantomime at TRSE is known for.

‘The script is sassy and modern yet loses none of the magic of this timeless story'
       The Stage - Sleeping Beauty

Hansel & Gretel is directed by TRSE's Associate Director Dawn Reid ('The Harder They Come', 'Familyman') who once again teams up with writer Hope Massiah ('The Snow Queen', 'Sleeping Beauty') to thrill and excite audiences of all ages with this year's show.

Teenagers Hansel and his sister Gretel live a comfortable life with their widowed father in the city until father loses all his money...again. This time however, father comes up with a foolproof plan for success (again) as a woodcutter.

The whole family, including Hansel and Gretel's new stepmother, move to the middle of nowhere, also known as, a cottage at the edge of a spooky forest. As if that wasn't bad enough, the forest is also home of the Wicked Wicked Witch who with the help of the Wolf lures Hansel and Gretel to her candy-clad cottage deep in the forest. With their new friends Arabella, Yellow Bird and Monty Mole, Hansel and Gretel embark on one of the scariest and most exciting adventures of their lives and discover a bit about themselves along the way.

TRSE is delighted to welcome back Marcus Powell in his second stint as Dame. Marcus, fresh from his role of Mr. Hilton in the West End transfer of 'The Harder They Come', is sure to delight as the comically overbearing stepmother. Also returning to the panto stage is Darren Hart in the role of Hansel. Darren, fondly remembered by audiences as Buttons in last year's Olivier Award nominated pantomime 'Cinderella', will no doubt bring Hansel to life with his unique style.
