Workshops in street dance, salsa, African village dancing, body popping and line dancing are running until the end of March at the council's warm centres and youth centres.
The competition is open to all young people and competitors do not need to take part in the workshops to enter however, they are encouraged to take full advantage of the tuition available.
Older people will take part in a community showcase alongside the youth competition finals.
All participants will have the opportunity to take part in fashion workshops to customise costumes for the finale during the week commencing Monday, February 16.
Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, said: "I hope the workshops will increase participation levels and help develop some understanding between the different age groups. This is a great opportunity for residents to get involved, keep fit and showcase their dance skills. A range of dances will be covered in the sessions so there's sure to be something for everyone."
The initiative is funded by Newham Council, the Newham Primary Care Trust and Sport England and is facilitated by Ape Media.
There are 24 warm centres across the borough, which are offering activities to residents aged over 50. They will be open until March.
