On 24 August 2008 the Beijing Olympic Games came to a close. The eyes of the world are now on London - and Newham - as hosts of the next summer Olympic Games. One of Newham's outreach children's centres, run by Woodgrange Infants School, was opened on 17 December by Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, who said: "This new centre will be a real benefit not only for the children and young people of Forest Gate, but the whole community. Newham has the youngest population in the UK, and children's centres are a vital factor in ensuring children and young people get the best possible start in life."
